Goal Mapping Social Mobility

Goal Mapping Social Mobility
I read a newspaper article the other day about how the Labour Government had thrown millions of pounds at boosting Social Mobility, and while the intention may have been well meant, it seems that the money was not always well spent.
I’m sure there were many fine programmes, worthy teachers and great opportunities, but as the old adage goes; you can lead a horse to water….
This great truth was brought home to me some years ago while making a series of presentations to Jobcentre Plus. My audience of several hundred manages were mostly new to personal development and I was unsure at first how my message of positive-thinking, personal-responsibility and Goal Mapping was being received. Then, at the end of one of the first workshops, the district manager got to his feet and addressed the audience thus; “we need to embrace this approach, not just for ourselves but also for the people we’re here to serve. Because if we can’t help the unemployed overcome poverty of thought and feeling we will never help them to support themselves and overcome poverty of pocket.”
I was awed. This man had not only taken on board the philosophy of positive thinking, but had got right to the heart of why it is vital for any society. Unless we are teaching people, from school onwards, that their attitude determines their altitude – that their thoughts and feelings produce their self-motivation, belief and confidence, which in turn shapes their results, they will always be dependent on others for their wellbeing, whether physical, financial, mental or emotional.
Speak with any successful person and they will testify that success is the result of thinking success thoughts and living with winning attitudes. University research verifies it, leading organisations invest in it and common-sense acknowledges it – your beliefs and attitudes shape your self, results and life. Social-mobility hinges on the individual wanting to be mobile and move forward with themselves and life. This is something that can be taught through workshops, inspired by leaders and developed in everyone.
What great pity then that some small minded people, whether parents, teachers, employees, leaders, MPs, and especially, members or the press, love to tear down anyone trying to help people improve their beliefs and attitudes.
Only today I read the latest attack, this time on Jobcentre Plus for teaching personal development. The journalist behind the piece will no doubt justify their actions saying ‘that they were informing the public of wasted tax-payers money on mumbo-jumbo’. But the real waste is the countless billions thrown at people who don’t want to help themselves, the countless lives lost in trying to fix things for people on the outside, rather than helping then to achieve for themselves from the inside.
My dad summed it up well; ‘life is a do-it-yourself game son’
